locorotondo

If you’re staying at I Trulli di Rò in Martina Franca, you can’t miss the opportunity to visit Locorotondo, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy and an Orange Flag of the Italian Touring Club. Just 9 km from our property, Locorotondo welcomes you with its quaint old town, perfect for a walk to discover the architectural beauty and breathtaking views of the Itria Valley.

A journey through time and history

Founded around the year 1000, Locorotondo takes its name from the distinctive circular shape of its historic center. The town is known for its “cummerse,” small dwellings with sloping stone roofs that once housed peasants and are now accommodations, carefully restored. Walking through the alleys of Locorotondo, one breathes a unique atmosphere, suspended between history and tradition, surrounded by the white stone of the houses and the bright colors of the flowered balconies.

What to see in Locorotondo

The historic center of Locorotondo is one of the most enchanting wonders of the Itria Valley. Among the main attractions not to be missed are:

  • Mother Church of St. George – An imposing church that dominates the historic center, with an elegant façade and a fine frescoed interior.
  • Church of Santa Maria della Greca – Another example of religious architecture that tells the story of Locorotondo.
  • Church of Our Lady of Sorrows – A place of worship with ancient and intimate charm.
  • Church of the Holy Spirit – A corner of serenity and spirituality.
  • Church of St. Nicholas – A church that combines tradition and beauty.
  • Church of San Rocco – One of the landmarks of Locorotondo, especially during the annual festivities.
  • Church of Our Lady of the Chain – Another example of the village’s rich religious tradition.
  • Palazzo Morelli – An elegant building that adds a touch of class to the cityscape.

An explosion of colors and flavors

Locorotondo is also famous for its wine, particularly Locorotondo DOC, a white wine made from Verdeca and Bianco d’Alessano grapes, perfect for pairing with fish dishes and appetizers. As you walk through the streets, you can’t help but also appreciate the landscape around you: vineyards, olive groves and trulli that tell the story of the area’s agricultural tradition.

An event not to be missed

If you visit Locorotondo in August, don’t miss the fireworks display on August 16, during the San Rocco celebrations. This event, which attracts thousands of spectators from all over Italy and abroad, is a veritable fireworks display that lights up the sky above the village in an explosion of color and light.
